MARION — Van Wert sophomore Gabe Steyer went 5-0 over the course of the 2-day Marion Harding Classic on Friday and Saturday, culminating with a 15-4 major decision victory in the championship match of the 132-pound weight class.

Steyer’s individual championship helped the Cougars to a 14th place finish among the 32 schools at the tournament.

Steyer won each of his first three matches via pin. He stopped Ajourn Lawrence of Mifflin in 1 minute and 29 seconds, then pinned Drew Ward of Highland late in the first round. Steyer pinned Seth Chrisman of Westerville South at 50 seconds of round one to advance to the semifinals.

Once there, Steyer dominated a 15-3 major decision win over Liberty Center’s Maguire Vollmar and took out Dublin Scioto’s Kemyon Parnell in the finals. Steyer is now 21-1 on the season.

Steyer was the highest-placing Cougar, but junior Isaiah Bretz also wound up with a strong tournament, placing fourth at 138 pounds. Bretz (19-5) pinned Galion’s Tyler Goodrich to open his tournament, then defeated Preston Weichart of St. Marys in the second round.

He out-pointed Highland’s Christian Miller to advance to the semifinals, but then lost to eventual champion Daniel Segura of Dublin Scioto.

In the consolation bracket, Bretz pinned Dallas Scott of Centerberg before losing a 6-3 decision to Sheridan’s Jake Lee in the third place match.

Josh Dorsch also placed fourth in his class, 120 pounds. The Cougar senior won each of his first two matches via pin before falling into the consolation bracket.

A 6-1 win over Mount Vernon’s Jacob Dehart put Dorsch in the third place match, but he succumbed to Kalib Patterson of Ridgedale in a 15-3 major decision.

Sophomore Ryan Pratt went 1-2 at 152 pounds, as did classmate Malachi Battle at 160. Junior Lloyd Eutsler also went 1-2 at 195. Killian Sudduth (106 pounds), Ben Lange (126), Macein Bigham (145) and Spencer Blue (182) each dropped both of their matches to go 0-2 in the tournament.

Bullinger wins at Cardington

CARDINGTON — Lincolnview’s Luke Bullinger captured the 113-pound championship at the Cardington-Lincoln Wrestling Invitational on Friday as the short-handed Lancers placed 10th among the 12 schools invited.

Bullinger pinned South Central’s Jaden Strickland in round one, then did the same to Mickey Dalton of New London in round two. In the title match, Bullinger dominated Arcadia’s Jordan Marezak in an 18-5 major decision.

Lancer teammate David Parson’s was third in the heavyweight class. Parson’s pinned Riverview’s Ian Diven in the first round, but lost to Arcadia’s Jordan Hill in round two. In the third-place match, Parson’s pinned Devin Spek of the host school.
