VAN WERT - The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 178 of Van Wert met on April 4. Secretary Roxie Brown distributed the March minutes. The minutes were approved as presented. Treasurer Nancy Blanke reviewed fund balances and read the bills for the month. The treasurer's report was filed for audit.

Roxie Brown read a communication received from the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Ohio which expressed appreciation for a recent donation. Ruth Schutz read communications from 2nd District. A golf outing will be held on June 8. June 21 will be a girls fast pitch softball tournament for grades 9-12. We can sponsor a team, provide donations, or work at the tournament. July 19-21 will be a double elimination Little League tournament at St. Mary's Park. President Ruth Schutz reported that the Executive Committee has approved a donation to the Dayton Veterans Hospital for the Easter party and the purchase of Girl Scout cookies to be sent to the troops.

Rose Myers provided an update on Girls State. Eleven girls will be attending, thanks to the generosity of the community. Rose Myers sought donations, Nancy Blanke kept records, and Marcia Etzler has prepared the publicity. Rose expressed appreciation to all assisting with activities for Girls State. Rose also expressed appreciation to those helping with the Tuesday dinners and funeral dinners. Those who regularly assist are Regina Henney, Helen Rode, Jean Wittung, Jane Struckenberg, Ramona Bostick, Linda Taylor, Rita Myers, Rose Myers, Ruth Schutz, and Roxie Brown. Additional help with clean up after Tuesday dinners would be appreciated. Ruth Schutz asked that members give suggestions of people who may be interested in becoming involved and could be contacted. This past month Regina Henney listed the bake sale on the sign and additional donations were received. Consideration was given to preparing single serving desserts for the bake sale. Rose reported that membership stands at 92 percent of goal. Twenty-six members are needed to reach goal.

Under old business, Ruth Schutz noted that Green Sheet reports were distributed in March. Committee chairs met on April 16 to work on reports. Rita Myers displayed table decorations and various items that could be used to assemble the decorations. A budget was approved and table decorations will be ready by Mother's Day.

Under new business, a donation was approved for the 2nd District birthday party being held at the Dayton Veterans Hospital in June. Gifts and prizes will be provided. Rose Myers has several barrels of donated items to take to Dayton. Donations approved included a case of copy paper for the Legion and a contribution to the Legion Club toward utilities. Items tabled included a raffle for the Auxiliary and the purchase of a paver for the Veterans Memorial at Wassenberg Art Center. Servers, workers, and desserts are needed for the Mother's Day meal. Upon recommendation of the Tuesday Dinner Food Committee, the June meal will be changed to chicken breast with assorted sides. Auxiliary members will provide salads and dishes for the side items.

Ramona Bostick, Nominating Committee chair, presented the slate of officers: President - Ruth Schutz, Second Vice Chairman - Regina Henney, Secretary - Roxie Brown, Treasurer - Nancy Blanke, Chaplain - Jean Wittung, and Sergeant at Arms - Marsha Kinder. Still needed are a First Vice Chairman and a past president for Member at Large. Elections will be held at the May meeting.

Chaplain Jean Wittung and President Ruth Schutz draped the charter for Rachael Rogers, a recently deceased member.

The Auxiliary dinner on May 7 will be beef Manhattan. A bake sale will be held during the Auxiliary dinner, with donations of baked goods being accepted. The meal is open to the public. Members, and the public, are encouraged to continue saving pop can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and fronts only of non-trade mark cards to be sent to St. Jude's Ranch for Children. Items will be collected at the Auxiliary's Tuesday night dinners. Pop tabs will be picked up in June for delivery to the Ronald McDonald House.

The next meeting of the Auxiliary will be Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. The Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., immediately prior to the regular meeting.
