VAN WERT - Van Wert County Veterans Service Officer Barry Johns announced that Aug. 31 has been designated "Veterans Day at the Van Wert County Fair". Senior Citizen Day will be on the same day. Senior Citizen Day starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. Veterans Day will start at 11 a.m. with ham and beans along with corn bread.
The Veterans Service Commission of Van Wert County, as well as every veteran's service organization in the county is sponsoring this event. All activities are being held in the Entertainment Tent which is located on the west side of the Commercial Building.
Barry said the events planned are free admittance of the veteran and spouse to the fair from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., free bean soup and cornbread served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a program at 12 noon with speaker Mike Hare of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. Music will be provided by Tom Rupert from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. and Cross Roads at 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
The Veterans Service Office will be moved to the fairground for the day and will open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to answer questions pertaining to VA benefits.
Guest speaker this year is Mike Hare from the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. Mike is a retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer.
Kim Hughes from the Van Wert County Recorder's Office will also be available to answer any questions pertaining to the importance of recording discharges as well as other services available through her office.
Elizabeth Estrada, office manager from the Lima VA Outpatient Clinic, Dayton VAMC, will be on hand to answer questions.
Plan to stop in and say hello to everyone and enjoy a bowl of ham & beans made by the VFW Post 5803 and corn bread made by Butlers Bakery.
