VAN WERT – Van Wert County Hospital and the Live Healthy Van Wert initiative are doing their part to lead families to a healthier lifestyle. The hospital is hosting a Fit Family Series in which families can learn about nutrition, fitness and healthy living.

The series, which will be on be three consecutive Saturdays, will be geared towards families with children ages 6-12 but all families are welcome to attend.

Van Wert County Hospital’s Occupational and Community Health Coordinator Anne Dunn said that when the hospital plans activities and events they take into consideration community needs as well as data and feedback from community members and those in the health care field.

“Based on the 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment data for Van Wert County, 18 percent of youth grades sixth through 12th grade are obese, and only 7 percent of youth consume the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis,” said Dunn.

The goal is to take the feedback that the hospital gets from parents and providers and help youth that are struggling with their weight make better healthy choices on a regular basis.

“The 2017-2019 Community Health Improvement Plan for Van Wert County focuses on three areas, one being obesity,” said Dunn. “The Live Healthy Van Wert initiative will create more opportunities in our community for families to have fun, learn and walk away with one or more healthier choices they will make moving forward.”

According to Dunn the first two sessions will include mock grocery shopping activities and fun family-friendly physical challenges.

The final week will include a Fit Family Amazing Race with destinations and challenges throughout Van Wert.

“This is a great opportunity to not only learn as a family but to meet other families working toward healthier families and have fun all at no cost,” said Dunn.

The Fit Family Series will be held at the Van Wert County Hospital on April 22, April 29 and May 6 from 9-10:30 a.m. and is free. Those who would like to participate are encouraged to register by calling 419-238-2390 or emailing info@vanwerthospital.org.
