After a week off, where the Van Wert Area Concert Band took the stage, the Van Wert County Foundation sponsored concerts return to the Fountain Park stage. The past two concerts have featured Big Band music from the 30's, 40's and 50's and an Independence Day Celebration of American Pop Music with the Lima Pops Orchestra.
This week, we return to the classic rock music from one of the most heralded rock bands of all-time- the Doobie Brothers. "Minute by Minute", a tribute band from New York, dedicated to bringing the best of the Doobies and former Doobie lead singer Michael McDonald will rock Fountain Park in a family-friendly concert this Friday night.
Formed in just 2011, this band of eight musicians, including saxophone, trumpet and trombone, is dedicated to take on the challenge of building a band of skilled musicians who are also friends outside of the music world. Their chosen music is that of the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald.
Over the years, the Doobies have sold over 40 million albums and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Their music has become staples in the field of rock music with a bit of country mixed in. I think you will be amazed at how many songs are familiar to you. It should be another fun evening in Fountain Park as we enjoy the smooth sounds of the Doobie Brothers music as well as former lead singer Michael McDonald's music.
First United Methodist Women's Team will be serving up food. You know it will be delicious, so come and support their efforts and enjoy a night of great music and fun! My philosophy on moving concerts indoors during the summer is to try and keep the concert outdoors if at all possible. As you know, many of the rains we get during the summer months come and go quickly. There is a lot of time and many people involved when having to move a concert indoors. So, unless it is just one of those days that looks like the rain has settled in for the day, we will keep the concert outdoors. A good indicator is to drive by the park and if you don't see the stage set with speakers and microphones by around 4:00 p.m., then it has been moved to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.
And speaking of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center, tickets have been flying out the door in rapid pace each day. The Select Series is one that has allowed many people the opportunity to buy early and reserve their seats for the many exciting concerts and shows coming this season. It also provides a small saving on your tickets.
I know some have tried to get through on the phone and it has rung busy. Obviously, we are serving other customers and unfortunately, you must just keep trying. Our manger and his volunteers have been working overtime and we have been doubling our efforts to keep up with the demand. So, keep trying and we thank you for your patience. Most have been very understanding and appreciate the fact that so many want to attend the concerts in Van Wert. However, a very few get a bit cranky. To them, I would say that we are always looking for more volunteers to assist. That is one way to find out firsthand what it is like to deal with the public.
Let's hope for a cool, sunny evening in Fountain Park and I look forward to seeing you Minute by Minute as they "Take it to the Streets." If you know the Doobie Brothers music, you understand. FINE (yep!- forgot last week.)
