VAN WERT - The 2012 Read One program has come to a close and according to the organizers, the event took a big step forward in only its second year.

"We are thrilled with the number of book titles turned in to us," said Kirk Dougal, Times Bulletin publisher. "Van Wert area residents more than doubled the number of books read during the month of October when compared to 2011 and seeing reading expanding in our area was always our goal. Teaming together with the Brumback Library really helped in that regard."

The Times Bulletin started the Read One program in 2011 as a way of promoting October as National Book Month and also to encourage literacy in the area. The Brumback Library helped the program by publishing lists of the top read books in different categories before October began and again halfway through the period. Last year area residents turned in 49 titles of books they had read during the month. This year that number swelled to 114 different books read in October.

Dougal pointed out there were several books that appeared multiple times. "No Easy Day" and "The Amateur" were two of the most popular non-fiction titles read by residents. Popular fiction titles included familiar authors such as George R.R. Martin, Ken Follett, Clive Cussler and James Patterson among others but books from the "Fifty Shades" series by E.L. James easily outdistanced all the others in the most times mentioned in the lists.

He also noted that a pleasant trend in this year's list was the number of children's and YA books increased dramatically over 2011.

"The importance of literacy cannot be overstressed," continued Dougal. "Whether someone is buying books, reading them on a Kindle, or utilizing a tremendous community asset like the Brumback Library, we hope reading will continue to be an activity area residents will continue all year long. This list is made up of books already read by their neighbors and friends and we hope everyone will take the time to look it over. The biggest reward is if they can find a new favorite book or author and then share them with someone else."
