WERT — Kanin May made his debut into the world at 2:46 p.m. Jan. 9
making him Van Wert County Hospital’s New Year’s Baby for 2017.
His parents, Chaise May and Jalyn Egnor, were surprised that Kanin was the first baby of the year.
“He was due on the 16th,” Egnor said. “I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be the New Year’s baby on the 9th but we’ll take it.”
“We’re excited,” she added.
Kanin was 7 pounds, 2 ounces.
“I still think he’s pretty tiny,” Egnor said.
Kanin will be welcomed home on Thursday by two older brothers, ages 5 and 3, who are excited to have another boy in the family.
Egnor also had her first son at Van Wert County Hospital.
“I know a lot of the women that are nurses on the OB floor,” Egnor said noting three
of the nurses went to Wayne Trace where she also attended. “It’s kind
of nice and makes you a little more comfortable when you have people you
know. They’re all really good here about coming in when you need them
and helping out.”
Van Wert County Hospital was up 15 births in
2016 compared to 2015, but coming into the new year, the hospital was
surprised at how many days passed before the first baby arrived.
was one of those things where we were just in a lull and I’m sure
there’s probably going to be a mass of babies being born in the last
half of the month,” said Ellen Rager, director of patient and community
relations for Van Wert County Hospital. “We can’t predict these things,
it was just the way it went and we are so excited for the family.”
the first baby of the 2017, Kanin and his family received Ghiradelli
chocolates and gift cards to takeout meals from Subway, Pizza Hut, and
Brewed Expressions - Cafe.
Kanin will also get a teething necklace
for mom to wear that is safe for him to chew on. The gift basket also
includes a stuffed elephant that plays music.
He will enjoy a
fuzzy winter hat, toys, books, rattles, and a giraffe blanket. The baby
bag also includes the essentials: a car seat canopy, bath grooming kit,
fun bath spout cover, two large boxes of diapers, wipes, a stroller
organizer and a Walmart gift card to buy other needed items.
