Joan Eggerss Wilkinson
PINEHURST, N.C. — Joan Eggerss Wilkinson, passed away Dec. 29, 2016, at her residence in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Jo was born June 13, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, to Hans A. and Ruth Harte Eggerss, and was raised in Van Wert, Ohio.

As a child Jo was an avid reader, a passion that continued throughout her long life. Through her teen years Jo adored attending summer camp every year in Northern Wisconsin. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics in 1944 from Connecticut College for Women in New London, Connecticut (Connecticut College).

Jo met Howard Wilkinson on the golf course of the Van Wert Country Club. She and Howdy were married in 1947 and were blessed with three children Christee, Holly and Brad.

In 1960, they moved with their children to Bloomington, Illinois, where she and her husband joined the Alpha Cellulose Corporation. In 1968, Alpha Cellulose Corporation moved its headquarters to Lumberton, North Carolina, where Jo became president and CEO until her retirement in 1994. Following their retirement, Jo and Howdy moved to their home at The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, where they spent their remaining loving years together. Throughout their 55 years of marriage they continued their passion for golf, travel, and spending time with family and friends.

With an eye for design, Jo was interested in gardening, art, and architecture. Two of her favorite projects were working with architect Elizabeth Lee and landscape architect, Richard (Dick) Bell in designing their homes in Lumberton and Pinehurst. Jo was a member of the Garden Club of Van Wert, Ohio; Bloomington, Illinois; and Lumberton, North Carolina. She volunteered and served on many boards including The Weymouth Center and The Robeson County Library. Jo and Howdy enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Asia and Europe during their Alpha Cellulose years but the most memorable trip was to South Africa and Zimbabwe to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. Fiercely loyal, Jo taught all who loved her how to be an incredibly generous and caring person.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Charles Wilkinson (2002), their son, Bradford Charles Wilkinson (1974) and her sister, Nancy Ruth Eggerss (1934). Jo is survived by her two daughters, Christine W. Donovan and her husband, Pat Donovan, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Holly W. Floyd and her husband, Tyler Horney, of Seven Lakes, North Carolina. She was adored by her eight grandchildren who knew her as Schatzee, Dru Donovan, Cullen Donovan, McKeever Donovan, Hennessey Donovan, Turner Floyd Scanlon, Drexel Floyd, Chelsea Blue, Cally Blue, and her two great-grandchildren Vivian Scanlon and Tyler Sanders.

A celebratory remembrance and luncheon will be held Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at 11:30 at The Country Club of North Carolina.

She will be interred beside Howdy and Brad at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Arrangements for burial are being handled by Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home.
