VAN WERT, Ohio - Robert Eugene Rickard, 90, of Van Wert, died at 5:23 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.
He was born Dec. 11, 1922, in Ohio City, Ohio, to the late Winfield and Mary Catherine (Mottinger) Rickard.
His wife, Ruth (Kittle), died May 1, 1972. They were married Jan. 4, 1949.
Survivors include his daughters: Diane (Bob) Carroll and Debbie (Tony) Krick, both of Van Wert; son: Robert Edward Rickard of Lima; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Doyt Rickard, and five sisters: Mabel Urton, Voyla Fleming, Cleo Irene Kiracofe, Marcile Harris and Lela Mae Wendel.
He retired from Continental Can Company (Greif Bros.) after 35 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and a member of American Legion Post 178, both of Van Wert. He was an avid baseball and NASCAR fan.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City. Military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the V.F.W. and American Legion.
Calling is Monday from 6-8 p.m.
Preferred memorial is Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
