VAN WERT - The Van Wert Cougar tennis team hosted the Wapakoneta Redskins to open the season Thursday, and came away with a 5-0 win.

Freshman Lane Mansfield took wins of 6-0 and 6-1 over his counterpart to lead the team in first singles, and sophomore Erik Yeung won the second doubles match by a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Nick Etter won matches 6-0, 6-2 in third singles.

Seniors Luke Stevens and Jon Lisa won the first doubles match 6-0, 6-0 and junior Eli Alvarez and freshman Brandon Amstutz teamed up to win in second doubles.

Ren Tang and Tryston Cowan won the JV match in three sets.

"It's good to start the season with a win, especially in the WBL," said Van Wert coach Mitch Price. "Wapak is a pretty good team and it's always nice to get a league win."

The Cougars return to action Tuesday at St. Marys.
