HAVILAND- The Lady Cougars continued to flex their muscle with a pair of wins on Saturday. Wayne Trace hosted both Van Wert and Bryan in a non-conference volleyball tri-match, but despite entering the day without a blemish on their record, the Lady Raiders came away 0-2 on the day.
In the day's opening match, the Lady Cougars took on the hosts and won the contest in two sets, 25-21 and 25-19. Van Wert then knocked off Bryan in three sets, 22-25, 25-11 and 25-20. Bryan defeated Wayne Trace, 25-17 and 25-22.
The Cougars improved to 10-2 on the season, including a 3-1 record in WBL play. Wayne Trace falls to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Green Meadows Conference.Van Wert got a strong service game from McKenna Merkle, who was 21 of 23 from the baseline in the two contests. Claire Gamble was even better, going 21-for-21 between the two matches.
Taylor Doidge led the Cougars with a dozen kills and Riley Jones added 22 assists, including 17 in the match versus Bryan. Amanda Coplin added 16 assists in total. Alexa Dunlap was a defensive whiz in the Bryan contest, compiling 31 digs for the match.
Wayne Trace was led by Madison McClure, who provided 15 assists between the two games played by the Lady Raiders. Brenda Feasy compiled 20 digs on defense and Sylvia Young hammered a total of 13 kills on the day.
Van Wert's Freshman team defeated Wayne Trace 25-13 and 25-11. The Lady Raiders won the JV affair, 26-24, 23-25 and 25-15.
Van Wert will host county rival Crestview on Monday evening, with JV action beginning at 6 pm. Wayne Trace travels to Hicksville for a conference match on Tuesday. JV time for that contest in 5:30 pm.
