ELIDA – Wednesday’s Division IV district semifinal between Lincolnview and Columbus Grove was a pitchers’ duel until the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldogs broke it open and went on to an 8-1 win.

Top-seeded Grove (18-4) advances to Friday’s 5 p.m. final against 2nd-seeded Ada, a 4-2 winner over 3rd-seeded Wayne Trace in Wednesday’s second game. The 4th-seed Lancers end the year at 9-13.

It was 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldog bats broke out big-time. After one was out, seven hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly produced six runs that made it 7-1 after five. Four of those six runs scored after two were out. Grove added an insurance run in the seventh.

“She (starting pitcher Amy Beair) might’ve gotten a couple of pitches up in the zone (in the fifth), but they made good adjustments,” said Lancer coach Brad Doidge. “Credit them for making adjustments.”

The game started well for the Lancers. With one out in the top of the first, rightfielder Lana Carey drew a walk. Catcher Alena Looser then doubled off the fence in center to put runners at second and third. First baseman Destiny Coil popped out to short, but third baseman Morgan Miller smoked a line-drive single off the third baseman’s glove, scoring Carey. However, that was the last time Lincolnview mounted a serious threat. Bulldog pitcher Teyah Sautter was in command from then on.

“She (Sautter) is a crafty pitcher,” said Doidge. “She knows what she’s doing out there, but our kids came to battle today. One inning got us, but I credit our girls for getting up there and competing.”

Lincolnview’s four hits came from Looser (double), Morgan Miller (RBI single), Coil (double), and second baseman Annie Mendenhall (infield single).

Columbus Grove had 15 hits, including multiple-hit games from first baseman Angel Schneider (3 for 4, one run, one RBI), catcher Danielle Bame (2 for 4, including a double, one run, one RBI), left fielder Tori Warnecke (2 for 3, one run), center fielder Jenna Hardeman (2 for 3, including a double, one run, two RBI), and second baseman Madison Nusbaum (2 for 3, one run, one RBI).

“We can compete with a lot of people,” added Doidge. “We’re 9-13, but we could easily have turned that around. We lost a lot of close games. Our girls know what they need to do now. Off-season, we have a plan, we’ll get in and work on some of our deficiencies.”
