HICKSVILLE – The Crestview Knights traveled to Hicksville High School on Saturday night for a non-conference action against the state-ranked Aces. The Knights picked up a huge victory on Saturday night by a score of 72-51.

The Aces brought a 15-1 record in the contest, and both teams were red-hot coming in. It was 11 straight wins for Hicksville and nine straight wins for Crestview.

The Knights jumped out to a 9-2 lead getting five points from Derek Stout, including a 3-point play. Hicksville rallied to tie the game at 9-9 and later at 11-11. The Knights briefly took a 14-11 lead before the Aces got back-to-back 3-pointers from Payton Tunis to go up 17-14 after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter, another two buckets from Tunis had Hicksville up 21-16. The Knights responded with four points from Stout and layup from Drew Kline, making it 22-21, Crestview.

Hicksville and Crestview went back and forth in the second period, and the game was tied at 27 and 29. The Aces got a layup from Ladon Turnbull to go up two, before Javin Etzler hit a long 3-pointer to give the Knights a 32-31 lead. Etzler drained two foul shots to send Crestview into the intermission up 34-31.

With the Knights up just one at 38-37, Crestview went on a game-defining run getting 10 straight points including six from Stout and a trey from Derek Dealey, 48-37. Another Dealey splash later in the third quarter put the Knights up 55-41.

Tunis later responded with a triple to bring the score to 57-44, Crestview. The Knights closed out the third quarter with a layup from Stout to make the score 59-44.

Five early points from Hicksville to start the fourth brought the score to 64-49. The Knights scored the next 11 points to end any hope of a rally from the Aces.

“I thought it was great effort by us tonight and I know they were down a guy in Parker Thiel. A lot of credit to Hicksville but I was very proud our guys after playing Friday to come play a team that is 15-1 at their place. I thought it was a good win for us,” said Crestview basketball coach Jeremy Best.

Michael Myers got the final bucket of the game with a layup for the Aces to bring the score to 72-51, Knights.

“Defensively in the first half we weren’t good. Credit to Hicksville and Tunis, they really drove the ball downhill on us and forced us to do something we typically don’t do. We had to change defenses and I thought it was effective and keep them off balance. Then we started to offensive rebounds and go into the post a little bit more,” finished coach Best.

The Knights improve to 14-3 on the season and Hicksville drops to 15-2 on the year.
