VAN WERT - The Lady Cougars faced off against the Spencerville Lady Bearcats on Monday night at the Cougars Den at Van Wert High School for girls non-conference hoops.  The Lady Cougars got a big night for Abby Jackson and Ally Jackson, as the sisters scored 22 points combine in the Van Wert 40-22 victory.

“Spencerville threw a lot at us with matchups but our motto is 'Gator Time' and when we say 'Gator Time' we mean that we attack with Abby Jackson first off and then teams will work to take that away. Then again she got going later on in the game and also her sister had a big night for us. But ultimately we had a good team effort tonight,” said Van Wert girls basketball coach Rob Adams.

Reagan Priest and Abby Jackson opened the ball game with a made foul shots and a layup to give the Lady Cougars a 3-0 advantage. Spencerville tied the game with a 3-pointer from Jenna Henline.

Van Wert responded with a bucket from Abby Jackson to take a lead the Lady Cougars would never surrender for the rest of the ball game. Alexis Rupert knocked down a trey and Priest added a jumper to increase the lead to 10-3, Van Wert.

The Lady Bearcats ended the first quarter with a 4-0 run, getting baskets from Henline and Tiffany Work, 10-7 Lady Cougars.

Two made foul shots from Abbygayle Satterfield cut the Van Wert lead to 10-9.

The Lady Cougars again responded with a bucket from Olivia Kline and a tripe from Ally Jackson, 15-9. Van Wert ended the first half up 17-11 thanks to a Cassidy Meyers jumper at the end of the second quarter.

The Lady Cougars held Spencerville to just four points for the second period in a row in the third quarter; all four points came from Jayden Smith. Van Wert however wasn’t held down as Rupert got four points during the quarter and Abby Jackson had five points, including a 3-point play.

Ally Jackson got another splash from beyond the arc and then an easy layup as Van Wert had a 31-15 advantage going into the final period.

The Lady Cougar lead ballooned to 36-17 thanks to three points from Abby Jackson and a jumper from Sierra Shaffer.

Spencerville went on a 5-0 run near the end of the final quarter as Work and Nelaya Burden both got layups for the Lady Bearcats, 36-20 Van Wert.

The Lady Cougars ended the game with two Ally Jackson foul shots and a jumper from Priest. Van Wert picked up the 40-22 victory over the Lady Bearcats.

Van Wert was led by Abby Jackson with 12 points and Ally Jackson with 10 points. The Lady Cougars also got seven points from Alexis Rupert on Monday night. Spencerville got six points from Jayden Smith and five points from Kaiden Grigsby.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well, we missed quite a few shots that I think we normally make. Give credit to Van Wert, they are a very physical team and they are coached very well. I think this game will make us better,” said Spencerville girls basketball coach Greg Ekis.

The Lady Bearcat now 2-8 on the year will play their next ball game will be at Spencerville High School against the Ada Lady Bulldogs on Thursday night. The Lady Cougars will welcome the Lady Indians of Lima Shawnee to Van Wert High School on Thursday night looking to improve on their 2-9 record.
