ROCKFORD - Jefferson girls basketball coach Dave Hoffman has seen a lot in his 30-plus years at the helm of the Lady Wildcats.
Saturday's battle versus Lincolnview in the finals of the Chatt Insurance Holiday Tournament was one he probably hasn't seen too often before and hopes he never sees again as the Lady Lancers dismantled the 'Cats 48-22.
The Wildcats (4-7) shot an icy 8-of-45 from the floor (2-of-13 beyond the arc) for 17.8 percent and only 4-of-7 at the line. Junior Rileigh Stockwell was high scorer with nine and the next-highest was classmate Makayla Binkley with four.
The performance left Hoffman shaking his head, at a loss for words.
"I don't know. We didn't do anything on either end of the floor. We didn't do what we needed to do," he confessed. "I never saw anything like it. We have a week to figure things out before we play again. I hope we do."
On the other hand, Lancer head man Dan Williamson was extremely pleased defensively.
"We get so much of our offense from our defense. We're not the tallest team in the world, so we have to make it a full-court game and turn the other team over," he said. "If we play defense like we did tonight the rest of the year, we're going to win some games."
The Lady Lancers (8-2) countered with 19-of-39 shooting (2-of-7 downtown) for 48.7 percent and 8-of-17 singles (47.1%). Seniors Katie Dye and Kaitlyn Brant led with 10 points each.
Jefferson struggled from the get-go, with Lincolnview's 2-2-1 three-quarter-court press that dropped into a man-to-man making tough sledding. Jefferson's own man-to-man defensive scheme also kept things close.
Jefferson did not score until the four-minute mark on two free throws by junior Brooke Culp and later, junior Katie Goergens hit a three-ball at 2:52 to get within 6-5. However, Dye finished her six-point quarter with a pair of buckets, a drive with 1:59 showing and a jumper from the left corner at 1:28 to make it 10-5 at the end of eight minutes.
Lincolnview turned it over seven times in the period but compensated with an 8-3 edge off the backboards. As well, Delphos shot 1-of-10 versus 4-of-4 for Lincolnview.
The Lancers began to take more command of this contest in the second period, outscoring their foe 13-8. Stockwell scored seven of her team's eight points but everyone else on the Wildcats struggled as they hit 3-of-11. On the other end, the Lady Lancers had five players score at least two points in the canto and led 23-10 on a 15-foot baseliner from junior Christine Stemen at 1:15. Stockwell netted an old-fashioned three-point play at 19.8 ticks to get her team within 23-13.
The blue-and-gold took total control in the third - 18-4 - as Jefferson simply couldn't find its way this day. They shot 2-of-13 for the quarter, adding six miscues, and Hoffman even went deep into his bench to try kick-start his unit, to no avail. Brant caught fire, scoring all 10 of her points, as Williamson also went deeper into his bench and still built the lead. Lincolnview's biggest lead of the period was 38-13 on a putback by Brant at 3:06 before sophomore Devann Springer's layin with 30 ticks on the board made for a 41-17 Lancer lead.
All that was left in the fourth was the margin of victory as Lincolnview's lead reached 29 points before Binkley three-ball late accounted for the final score.
Stockwell and Binkley led Jefferson with five boards each. They amassed 12 fouls. They host Edgerton 6 p.m. Saturday (JV start).
"Jefferson played with us the first half. We had a few too many turnovers because we were trying to force things," Williamson added. "We got back to the things we need to do, make good decisions with the ball and move it around. We started getting great shots and hit more than a few."
Senior Kaylee Thatcher led Lincolnview with six boards and five apiece from Dye, sophomore Julia Thatcher and classmate Ashley Teman. Sophomore Hannah McCleery added five steals and three assists.
