The Van Wert Girls Acme fastpitch team took first place in a five-team single elimination tournament on Saturday, June 23, in St Henry. Consistent hitting and a tight defense in all of the games kept the Van Wert team in good position to win it all.The first game was easily won with the Van Wert girls beating out New Bremen.
In game two, Van Wert topped Celina 7-1 by scoring one run in each of the first four innings, then finally breaking loose adding three more in the top of the fifth. Celina almost scored in the first inning, but tried to stretch a triple into a home run and came up on the short end due to a great defensive play. The hard-hit ball was chased down by centerfielder Maggie Allmandinger. She hit the cut off, shortstop Brooke Fuerst, who then fired the ball to catcher Kelsey Saylor just in time to make the tag at home plate. Celina scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained 7-1 till the end of the game.
Van Wert started out game three against Coldwater with a nice string of singles from Melissa Roop, Brittany Bigham, Kelsey Saylor, and Jessica Klausing, followed by doubles from Brooke Fuerst and Amanda Coplin. The Cougars racked up four runs. Coldwater came back with a lead off double, a couple of fielders' choices and two singles bringing in a pair of runs, before Van Wert shut the door. The second inning was just as lucrative for Van Wert. Allmandinger started off with a single, Melissa Roop walked, and both were brought home by a stand up double from Bigham. She scored on a hit by Kelsey Saylor. Klausing and Fuerst singled, and Coplin drew a walk. Coldwater got out of a jam when the third baseman caught a hard-hit line drive by Tiffany Ricketts and caught the runner off base for a double play ending the inning. Coldwater did not score. Van Wert had a nice lead of 8-2.
Van Wert scored one run in the third when Allmandinger singled to left, stole second, and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Bigham. It looked to be a good inning for Coldwater with Hemmelgarn and Holman leading off with singles. Keosting ripped a line drive to third base, which was caught by Melissa Roop for the first out. She fired it to Bigham catching Hemmelgarn off first base for out number two. Bigham then fired the ball to Sydney Dull catching Homan off second base for a rare triple play. Van Wert added one more run in the seventh making the final score 10-2.
