WAPAKONETA — Two of the best teams in the Western Buckeye League locked horns on Saturday, as Wapakoneta hosted Van Wert. A combined 2-hitter from a pair of Redskin pitchers and a 4-run second inning boosted the hosts to a 6-1 win.

Wapak is now 10-2 on the year and 4-0 in league play. Van Wert dropped to 10-2 with the loss and 1-2 in WBL action.

Junior Manny Vorhees toed the slab for Wapak to begin the game, and he worked the first 3 1/3 frames before giving way to Maddux Liles in the fourth. Vorhees was touched up for a run in the first inning as Mason Carr doubled to center and Hayden Maples singled him home. Before Vorhees had thrown his fifth pitch of the day, he club was behind.

Maples’ base hit, however, was the last hit the Cougars recorded on the day.

In the meantime, Maples, who started on the mound for Van Wert, struggled with his control early, as he plunked the first batter of the home half, Liles, – on a 3-0 pitch — then uncorked a wild pitch moving Liles to second. A single from Nate Schroer knotted the score before Maples settled down.

In the home half of the second, however, it was the Cougar defense that struggled. Mike Burton reached on an error to start the inning and wound up at second. After a sacrifice bunt, Bubba Miller singled in a run before he, too, was advanced on a bunt. A base hit by Joel Roediger brought in Wapak’s third run (Miller), and Maples again hit Liles with a pitch. Another wild pitch moved Liles into scoring position, and, as he did in the first inning, Schroer came up with a clutch base hit, this time driving in two and giving Wapak a 5-1 advantage.

Wapak’s last run came in the bottom of the third as Mitch Apple greeted reliever Jake Lautzenheiser with a ringing double, and Burton followed with a double of his own.

From that point on, Lautzenheiser was in control, as he gave up just two more hits the rest of the way. With Liles, who relieved Vorhess with two on and one out in the Van Wert fourth, cruising, however, there was little hope for a Cougar comeback.

Van Wert will look to get back in the win column when the Cougars host Wayne Trace on Monday at Smiley Park.
