VAN WERT — On Sept. 4, 2018, at 10:10 p.m., the Van Wert City Police made a traffic stop in the 1200 block of North Washington Street on a vehicle operated by Virginia Jo Marie Schrader, 28. In the passenger seat of the vehicle was Bradley W. Sheets, 36.

The Police Department has had prior knowledge of Schrader transporting drugs to and from Van Wert. During the traffic stop, Schrader admitted to having marijuana and paraphernalia in the vehicle. The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit helped at the scene, giving a positive alert.

With all the information above, probable cause was established to search the vehicle. Small plastic bags, digital scale, and black case containing glass pipe, grinder, marijuana, pills and syringes were located. A further search was conducted and approximately 15 grams of what tested positive for methamphetamines were discovered.

The trunk of the vehicle was searched and a stolen 12-gauge shotgun was immediately visible laying across the other items in the trunk. Schrader and Sheets are convicted felons and as such are prohibited from possessing a firearm. Upon further examination of the trunk, a camo book bag which was found to contain a green reloading box and a box of Browning 12 gauge ammunition, was located. Later examination determined that the reloading box contained 88 .223 cal. rounds and three spent casings while the Browning box was found to contain four 12-gauge shotgun rounds. Also located in the trunk was a large black bag with wheels on it. Inside this bag was a Crossman BB pistol, two 5.56 X 45 magazines, and a 7.62 X 39 magazine. Later examination determined that the 5.56 magazines contained seven total rounds (three in one magazine and four in the other) and the 7.62 magazine was found to contain 23 rounds of ammunition.

Virginia Jo Marie Schrader was arrested on an outstanding warrant, trafficking in methamphetamines, a third degree felony, and having weapons under disability, also a third-degree felony.

Bradley W. Sheets was arrested for trafficking in methamphetamines, a third degree felony, and having weapons under disability, also a third-degree felony.

The guns in the trunk matched items from burglaries the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating. That office will be following upon that investigation.
