VAN WERT — During its regular January Board meeting, the Van Wert City Schools Board of Education voted to take another step in the process to secure funding to renovate Eggress Stadium by approving a resolution to proceed with a 20-year, 1.15 mill, 5 million dollar bond issue.

In addition, Board members were recognized for their work as January is School Board Recognition Month. Superintendent Mark Bagley said the expressions of appreciation boiled down to two simple words, thank you.

At the organizational meeting, it was decided that Anthony Adams will again serve as Board president with Dr. Rachel White as vice president. Board members Gregory Blackmore and Scott Mull took the oath of office. White was appointed a representative to the Athletic Council, the alternate delegate to the OSBA Annual Capital Conference, and representative to the Neola Policy Development Committee; Blackmore was appointed a representative to the District Safety Team and VWAPAF (Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation); Mull was appointed a representative to VWASIG (Van Wert Area School Insurance Group); Debby Compton was appointed a representative to the Vantage Board of Education; and Adams was appointed OSBA (Ohio School Boards Association) legislative liaison/delegate to the Capital Conference.

The Board’s regular meetings for this year were set for the fourth Wednesday of each month from February to October and the third Wednesday for November and December. The meetings will begin at 5 p.m.

In other action, the Board:

* Approved the 2023 tax budget.

* Approved Andrea Shaffer as an elementary school paraprofessional.

* Approve supplemental contracts to Angie Myers as Middle School Quiz/Scholastic Bowl Coach and Chris Kraner as High School Quiz/Scholastic Bowl Coach.

* Approved a two-year administrative contract to Trent Temple, athletic director.

* Approved Van Wert City School’s participation in the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Group Retrospective Rating Program with Sedgwick Claims Mgmt. Services as the representative.

* Approved overnight stays for the wrestling team to the Marion Harding wrestling tournament on Dec. 29, 2021, the Robotics Club to Kirtland on Jan. 14 - 15, 2022, Dayton on March 4 - 5, 2022 (pending state qualification), and Cleveland on March 23 - 26, 2022, and the Beta Club to the Beta Convention at the Hyatt Convention Center, Columbus, on Feb. 15-16.

* Approved Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) Agreements for the City of Van Wert, Van Wert County with V WERT 2, City of Van Wert, Van Wert County with MBK, LLC, and City of Van Wert, Van Wert County with VAN WERT FORWARD 1 LLC.

* Accepted donations from Citizens National Bank for $500 to Van Wert Goedde School’s Principal’s Fund, Main Street Van Wert for $100 to high school choir, First Bank of Berne for $400 to Jumpin’ Jammers Elementary Wellness, Class of 2001 for $111.21 to The Grove of Mighty Oaks project, Mr. Ed’s Driving School for $500 to High School’s Principal’s Fund, Van Wert Athletic Boosters for $570 to Boys’ Basketball Activity Account, Central Mutual Insurance Company for $2,500 to high school robotics, and Van Wert Service Club, Inc. For $500 to middle school robotics.

The next meeting of the Van Wert City Schools Board of Education is set for Feb. 23 beginning at 5 p.m. in the First Federal Lecture Hall of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.
