VAN WERT — The Lancers run and gun offense had just enough energy on Saturday night to take out the Cougars 62-48 on their home court, and earn Lincolnview Head Coach Brett Hammons his 100th career victory.

"It's great to get this win," said Hammons following the game. "We've been through 20 practices and five scrimmages and these kids battled for four quarters against a good team."

The Lancer faithful was out in full force as the visitors side of the gym was the loudest from the opening tip, to the final buzzer.

Lincolnview opened the game equally as strong on the court, as a pair of threes from Collin Overholt helped the Lancers out to a 14-8 lead that would ultimately turn out to be a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a late Van Wert bucket. Overholt finished the night as the Lancers leading scorer with 15 points.

The Cougars, who were playing the second night of a back-to-back, would wake up the second quarter when Keaton Brown and Clayton Proffitt drilled threes, with a Jake Bowesock layup in between to make the score 18-16.

Jake Hilleary tied the game after he fought in a layup following a Van Wert defensive stop to make the score 18 all.

Senior Clayton Proffitt knocked down a high arcing three to give the home team their first lead in the contest late in the first half at 23-22.

Van Wert's lead would last less than a minute, as running shot by Creed Jessee gave the Lancers 30-29 lead to take into the locker room.

The Lancers stepped back on the court re-energized and opened up the half with back-to-back threes from Aaron Cavinder and Clayton Leeth, two vintage Lincolnview possessions of running, cutting, and shooting efficiently.

"We really like to get out and run, and get shots in transition off of cuts and screens," Hammons said. "Give these kids the credit. They put in a lot of time in the off-season to get better."

The Cougars fought back, as they did throughout the night, and erased a seven point lead thanks to a pull up by Brown and a Tanner Barnhart layup. Brown and Barnhart bounced back nicely on Saturday scoring eight and 13 points respectively after rough games against Crestview on Friday.

On the backside of a Lincolnview timeout, the Lancers ended the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 46-38 lead thanks to a steal and score from Creed Jessee and a Leeth put-back at the buzzer.

Lincolnview opened up it biggest lead of the evening when a long three by Landon Price made the game 51-41, but the Cougars refused the go down quietly.

Van Wert sparked an 11-2 run, capped off by an Owen Treece three, to get themselves right back into the thick of things. Treece followed up his 40 point performance against Crestview on Friday by finishing with 18 on Saturday, something that left Brett Hammons praising his defense at the end of the night.

"Owen's one of the best players in area. I'm pleased that we were able to hold him to 18 points after his huge game against Crestview."

Lincolnview would use a 5-0 run that helped them seal the deal after the two teams traded buckets down the stretch.

The Cougars had a few chances to tie the game with the score at 58-55 on three point attempts by Treece and Brown, but failed to convert and were forced to play the foul game.

Aaron Cavinder hit two clutch free throws with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to seal the win for the Lancers at 62-48.

"These kids really gave it all they had against a good Van Wert team," said Hammons. "To be able to put a W on the board and see the smiles on all of these guys faces is what it's all about."

The Lancers will travel to Continental to face the Pirates on Saturday, while the Cougars will travel to Parkway to face the Panthers on Friday.
