VAN WERT COUNTY – Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach announced today the arrest of Jason J. Allen, age 45, of Middle Point, after an incident that took place on Feb. 7, 2019. Sheriff Riggenbach stated at 10:03 p.m. on Feb. 7, the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from a woman at a business in Ridge Township stating an intoxicated male had pulled a knife and was threatening another male.

When deputies arrived at 10:10 p.m., they observed a male subject walking to a vehicle at the business. A female in the parking lot advised the deputies the male subject was who pulled a knife. The female also told deputies the male purposely crashed a car into her car. Deputies attempted to contact the male subject, but he got into a vehicle and left the scene. Deputies then pursued after the subject. The subject drove about 1.5 miles before pulling over.

When the male subject pulled the vehicle over, he immediately got out of the car and started coming back toward the deputies. Deputies immediately gave instructions to the male to stay where he was and lay down on the ground. The male did not obey the instructions of the deputies and continued to come at them.

After repeated instructions by deputies were not followed by the male subject, a deputy deployed a taser on the male subject. The taser was not effective, and the male subject continued to come at deputies. The male subject advanced on one of the deputies faster than the deputy could maintain a safe space between them. The deputy then struck the male subject in the face with the taser unit. This allowed the deputy to grab the male subject and take him to the ground.

The male subject continued to fight with deputies on the ground. A short time after deputies got the male on the ground additional deputies arrived on scene and found the male still fighting with deputies to keep from being handcuffed. Deputies instructed the male to quit fighting with them and to put his hands behind his back. The additional deputies were able to get the male subject's hands behind his back and place handcuffs on the male subject. Due to the male subject fighting, three deputies were injured to varying degrees and were treated at Van Wert Health before being released.

During the investigation deputies learned prior to their arrival, the male subject had pulled a knife on two patrons of the local business, saying he would cut them and would kill them. The patrons left the business, only for the male subject to follow them in a car and purposely crash into the car the patrons were driving.

The male subject, Jason J. Allen, age 45, of Middle Point, was arrested and charged with:

- 2 Counts Aggravated Menacing a Felony of the 5th degree

- Obstructing Official Business a Felony of the 5th degree

- Resisting Arrest a Misdemeanor of the 1st degree

- Failure to Comply with a Lawful Order a Misdemeanor of the 1st degree

- OVI a misdemeanor of the 1st degree

Allen was transported to the Van Wert County Correctional Facility where he is being held until his arraignment in Van Wert Municipal Court. Sheriff Riggenbach said the investigation is continuing and more charges could be filed.

“This was a very dangerous situation, and I am thankful the outcome wasn’t any worse for everyone involved," said Sheriff Riggenbach. "Our deputies work hard every day, to protect the people of Van Wert County and to go home when their shift is complete.”

The Ohio State Patrol and Middle Point Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.
