VAN WERT – Van Wert High School art students received $10,000 for their Top 5 finish in a Vans art competition where they had to design two pairs of Vans shoes to the themes “Local Flavor” and “Off The Wall.”

Students gathered in the Niswonger Performing Arts Center on Tuesday to hear if they won the top prize of $75,000, a concert, and a school-wide BBQ. While the students didn’t win the top spot, they came in the Top 5 in the nation out of an overall total of 500 schools. Fifty schools had made it to the final round which required a public vote.

Art teacher Hailey Gross said the money will likely be spent on electric wheels and updated ceramic and sculpture materials.

The project was a group-effort that took over two months. Students involved included Caton Williamson, Lily Good, McKenzey Sanderson, Paige Moonshower, Katie McVaigh, Erin Cassidy, Savannah Nygren, Kathryn Wray, Jennifer Haggis, Ayana Rowe, Max Laney, Alexis Metz, and Casey Kiracofe.
