GROVER HILL — A Continental woman was killed in a traffic accident when the car she was driving crossed the center line and hit a tractor-trailer rig.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post, At 3:46 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by 53-year-old Jane C. Deken drove left of center and hit a 2000 International semi on St. Rt. 637 just north of Jackson Township Rd. 82 in Paulding County.

By the time emergency personnel reached the scene, the semi was engulfed in flames on the east side of the road in a field and the Impala just north of the semi. The investigators say when the collision happened, the truck caught fire almost immediately while the Impala stopped on the eastside shoulder of Rt. 637.

The driver of the semi, Brandon J. Appel, 23, Edgerton, escaped injury in the accident by jumping from the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames. Deken sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Paulding County Coroner. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash, and both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Assisting at the scene were the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, Paulding and Grover Hill Volunteer Fire, Paulding EMS, Paulding County EMA, Ohio Department of Transportation, Gideon’s Towing and Recovery, and J & R Towing.

An investigation of the events leading up to the crash is continuing.

St.Rt, 637 was closed for approximately four hours during the investigation and scene clean-up.
