VAN WERT – Jacque Welch, administrator for Van Wert Manor noted recently that the facility has received a Five-Star Quality Rating, the highest possible for its staffing and care of residents.

Welch explained that the rating came through the American Health Care Association.

“Nursing Home Compare has a quality rating system that gives each nursing home a rating between one and five stars,” said Welch. “Nursing homes with five stars are considered to have above average quality and nursing homes. There is one overall five-star rating for each nursing home, and a separate rating for each of three factors.”

Those factors include:

-Health inspections: Inspections include the findings on compliance to Medicare and Medicaid health and safety requirements from onsite surveys conducted by state survey agencies at nursing homes.

-Staffing Levels: The staffing levels are the numbers of nurses available to care for patients in a nursing home at any given time.

-Quality Measures: The quality of resident care measures are based on resident assessment and Medicare claims data.

“This ranks you how well your nursing home does,” commented nursing director Jackie Hernandez. “This building is a Five Star Building. It is a humanitarian award. It means we are difficulty free and ranked number one in the state.”

“Our goal is always to give exceptional care to our residents. This award proves that we are doing that,” said Welch. “We want to do all that we can to give people the joy of life while they are living here.

“This means an outside agency agrees that we are the best,” added Welch. “We have an amazing staff that gives themselves to everybody and works hard.”

CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of nursing home residents by ensuring giving to residents, commented CMS Administrator Seema Verma.

“Our goal is to drive quality improvements across the nursing care and receiving the highest quality of care possible,” said Verma. “Our updates to Nursing Home Compare reflect more transparent and meaningful information about the quality of care that each nursing home receives to empower consumers to make decisions, with more confidence, for their loved ones.”

Verma noted that the Nursing Home Compare website and Five-star Quality Rating System were created to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes and identify areas they may want to ask about when looking at nursing home care.

“This is indeed a highly esteemed honor,” said Welch. “I don’t think it has hit us completely yet what this all means.”
