VAN WERT – Nearly 60 years after he was set to graduate, Glenn Morefield received his high school diploma from Van Wert High School on Wednesday.

Morefield was born April 16, 1942, in Virginia. He moved to Van Wert County to Venedocia in 1953 and attended Van Del School until he graduated junior high. He then began high school at Van Wert in 1958.

Morefield entered into the service on July 15, 1959, where he was an air defense fire control crewman. Morefield noted that his dad had to sign off on him going into the military and part of the bargain was that he would graduate.

"I told my dad that I would finish my education when I went into the service if he would co-sign for me to go in," said Morefield. "I went in when I was 16 years old. That was what I decided to do and [dad] finally agreed with me."

While in the service, Morefield gained his GED and was discharged on July 9, 1962. He would have graduated as part of the Van Wert High School Class of 1962.

"It took me a long time," said Morefield after receiving the diploma. "But I had to make time to do it. After I retired I had plenty of time."

After returning home, Morefield worked for 30 years as an operative, plaster, and cement mason. He has four children, and Morefield currently resides in the Rockford area.

After receiving his diploma during Wednesday's Van Wert Board of Education meeting, Morefield was able to fulfill his promise to his father.

"On behalf of Van Wert City High School, this certifies that Glenn Morefield has completed a regular course of study recommended by the State of Ohio and approved by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for a high school of the first rate and is therefore awarded this diploma given this month of May, 1962," read Van Wert Board of Education President Scott Mull. "On behalf of the Van Wert City School Board of Education, congratulations on receiving your diploma and for your service you've served to our country."

Member of the Veterans Service Office helped Morefield obtain his diploma. According to a representative from the VSO, military veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam who did not receive a high school diploma are able to do so through an application process.
