VAN WERT – On Sunday, Wireless Zone, located on Fox Road, gave away 96 backpacks filled with school supplies. This is the 7th year of the "School Rocks Backpack Giveaway."

Each year TCC and Wireless Zone stores work with Round Room, LLC, the nation’s largest Verizon Authorized Wireless Retailer, to give away backpacks. This year, more than 800 participating stores are donating 140,000 backpacks nationwide.

Van Wert Wireless Zone Store Manager Jona Keller said it was especially important to do the backpack give away this year.

"We do this every year, but this year, especially, with everything going on, we know that the need for the backpacks is there a little more-so with everything being so unstable and unsure," said Keller.

Each year the number of backpacks donated grows. Keller noted that this year the Van Wert location was able to give more backpacks away.

"We got to do a little more this year because we knew the need would be a little bit greater," said Keller.

As an added bonus, five $10,000 scholarships will be given away in honor of Round Room, LLC giving away their millionth backpack in 2020.

Each backpack was filled with supplies such as pencils, pens, pouches, glue, and more. Each backpack came with a paper listing instructions on how to enter to win one of the scholarships.

Each child was able to receive one backpack and recipients were asked to wear masks for safety. Children did not have to be present to receive a backpack. In year's past, Wireless Zone also held a cookout, but due to COVID-19, they were unable to do so this year. Instead, a tent was set up in the parking lot allowing for a drive-thru giveaway.
