BARRE, Vt. — Bernard Lee Flanagan, 66, of Barre, Vermont, died on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at his home.

He was born on March 17, 1952, the son of Billy K. and Gloria (Acker) Flanagan. He attended the Van Wert High School in Van Wert, Ohio, graduating in 1970.

On Nov. 7, 1980, Bernie enlisted into the United States Navy where he served until his honorable discharge in 1984.

On Oct. 19, 1985, Bernie married Marsha Bellows in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Both he and Marsha lived in many places throughout the world as a military family and settle in the central Vermont area in 1998. Marsha predeceased him on Aug. 3, 2005.

Bernie was a longtime employee of the Walmart in Berlin and was known for his friendly nature and kindness to all. Christmas was a special time for him. Santa Clause had a striking resemblance to Bernie, when he would visit the Berlin Mall at Christmas!

Survivors include his sister, Shelly Smith and her husband, Les of Celina, Ohio; and his caregivers, Mitchell and Amy Greenslit.

Calling hours will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6 at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m.
