VAN WERT — The Van Wert girls had their second straight competitive home match against a Putnam County opponent on Tuesday night, but just as Kalida did last Thursday, Ottoville came out on top despite an extension beyond three sets.

The Lady Green won the first set 25-22, then Van Wert evened things up at one with 25-21 victory in set two. Unfortunately for the Lady Cougars, they couldn't hold down Elise Kramer and Ottoville any longer as they prevailed 25-15 in set three and 25-21 in the fourth set to close out the evening.

Kramer was a force on both sides of the ball, but was most dominant in attacking after she finished with a game-high 29 kills.

Van Wert started strong out of the gate with four of the first five points before Ottoville made runs to tie the first set at four, five and six.

The Lady Green pulled away with a sequence that included two aces from Kara Burgei, a block from Kramer, two more aces from Burgei and a kill from Kramer that took the game from 12-10 Ottoville to 19-10 in a hurry.

The Lady Cougars made a late push with four straight points, three on Olivia Treece kills to make it a 23-22 game, but a couple return errors ended the first set at 25-22 in favor of the visitors.

The second set started the same way the first did, with another good run from Van Wert to take a 6-1 lead. Ottoville answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game up at six, which resulted in additional ties at points seven, eight, nine, 10, 15 and 16 until a kill from Jordanne Blythe accounted for the set's final lead change.

Van Wert held off every attempt from Ottoville to comeback and Maria Bagley capped set two with a kill at a 25-21 final.

The Lady Green righted the ship in the third set with a commanding 10-point victory. Kramer recorded five straight points to take the score from 18-14 to 23-14 and the set concluded at 25-15.

In the final set of the night, Van Wert led 15-14 until a kill, block, kill sequence from Kramer gave Ottoville a two-point lead.

Four more ties ensued, then a tip from Burgei sent the Lady Green on a 4-0 run to close out the game with a 25-21 final set win.

Ottoville is now 6-2 on the season, while the Lady Cougars are still without a victory at 0-7. Van Wert's next game is on Thursday at home against Wapakoneta.

Ottoville's win was also the 200th career victory for head coach Chuck Sperry.
