ANTWERP - In a battle of two evenly matched teams, host Antwerp picked up a county rivalry win over visiting Wayne Trace in five sets Tuesday night in Green Meadows Conference volleyball action.

The Archers won the decisive fifth set 15-12, overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to pick up the victory. Antwerp also posted a pair of 25-23 wins, taking set one and set three. Wayne Trace recorded a 25-20 victory in the second set while the Raiders captured game four 28-26.

In game five, Wayne Trace picked up a kill and block from Alli Hefner to open a quick 3-0 lead but the Archers answered with a 10-3 spurt in taking a 10-6 advantage.

Kaitlyn Hamman led the way for Antwerp, posting three kills and an ace in the run, while Chloe Franklin added a tip for a point and Alyssa Fuller recorded a kill.

After a Hefner block pulled Wayne Trace within 10-7, a Fuller slam and a Raider hitting error widened the Antwerp margin to 12-7.

A kill from Olivia Egnor and a tip for a point by Miriam Sinn helped the Raiders pull within 13-11 before another Fuller slam made it 14-11 Archers.

Sadie Sinn answered with a kill for Wayne Trace, trimming the deficit to 14-12, before Antwerp sealed the 15-12 victory on a Raider hitting error.

“It was a match between two very even teams,” said Antwerp head coach Paul Stoll. “It was back and forth and both teams played very, very hard.”

Raider head coach Angie Speice was proud of the effort from her squad despite the loss.

“The girls played their hearts out,” said Speice. “We battled and battled all night long and the girls never gave up. I am very proud of the effort they gave tonight and we just need to bounce back and get ready for Ottoville on Thursday.”

Alli Hefner posted 22 kills for Wayne Trace with Kaylee Shepherd adding 26 assists, 23 digs and four kills. Miriam Sinn also added 15 assists, 11 digs and seven kills for the Raiders, who fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the Green Meadows Conference.

Sadie Sinn picked up 25 digs and three kills for Wayne Trace.

Alyssa Fuller posted 14 kills and 14 digs for Antwerp with Kaitlyn Hamman recording 13 kills and 23 digs. Karsyn Brumett chipped in 37 digs for the Archers, who improve to 5-3 in all matches and 1-1 in the league.

Antwerp’s junior varsity recorded a 25-22, 25-17 win over Wayne Trace while the Antwerp freshman team defeated the Raiders 25-11 and 25-9.
