OTTOVILLE — For an opener, both the Ottoville and Lima Temple Christian boys basketball teams took great care of the basketball, combining for 23 turnovers. It came down to the Big Green’s better depth and rebounding prowess, plus a pair of veteran seniors.

Captains Logan Kemper totaled 25 points and 14 boards and Nick Moorman added 22 as the green-and-gold wore down the Pioneers 75-52 in the lid-lifter at L.W. Heckman Gymnasium in Ottoville.

Freshman Josh Thorbahn came off the bench for 16 points and seven rebouds for the hosts, as Ottoville — with head coach Keith Utendorf making his debut — outrebounded its foe 49-29 (24-10 offensive).

“We went nine deep in our rotation. Temple has such great shooters, we wanted to keep fresh bodies on (Noah) Howell and (Brody) Bowman, especially, and try to take their legs away,” Utendorf said. “We knew they’d play hard but they wouldn’t go as deep as we could. Nick and Logan took the leadership on the court and took the game on their shoulders, but we got some great contributions from everybody we played.”

The first half was close throughout as the home team grabbed a 32-30 halftime lead.

With better depth able to hound Pioneer shooters Howell and Bowman and make them work harder, still, the visitors hung tough, holding their final lead of 40-39 on a Howell 3-pointer. Moorman heated up in the third period, scoring 17 of the team’s 21, and put his squad up 41-40 for good halfway through. Slowly, they extended the lead, and, when Moorman buried a 50-footer from the right wing as time expired, Ottoville led 53-44.

That seemed to take some wind out of the LTC sails into the fourth, plus Kemper began to dominate inside and on the glass. His 13 points in the quarter, to go with six boards, helped the Big Green pull away as they outscored their foe 22-8 in the finale.

In the first period, the teams went at it toe-to-toe. Howell shook loose for 11 points in the period, including three treys, and Temple battled the Big Green to a draw everywhere else. When Howell dropped a triple from the left corner with 50 seconds to go on the clock, the visitors had an 18-14 spread.

The second period was much of the same for most of the way as the teams went back and forth, trading the lead several times. When Moorman drive down the lane for a bucket with 2.0 on the clock, that gave the home team that 32-30 halftime edge.

In the junior varsity matchup, Jack Langhals led Ottoville with 12 counters in a 51-13 rout.

Both teams return to action on Saturday: Ottoville versus Cory-Rawson at home with a 5 p.m. JV start, and Lima Temple Christian hosting Continental.
