NEWBREMEN- The New Bremen Cardinals welcomed the Parkway Panthers to New Bremen High School on Friday night for Midwest Athletic Conference football action. The Cardinals picked up their second win in the MAC with a 33-13 win.

The Panthers caught two bad breaks on Friday night that turned what could have been a one possession game into an easy New Bremen victory. Two long touchdown pass for the Cardinals were very much under-thrown but still resulted in New Bremen scores.

The first half couldn’t gave gone worst for Parkway field position wise as the first three Parkway drives started on their own 28, own 21 and own 9.

The Cardinals starting their second drive of the first half started near midfield field. After New Bremen picked up two first downs on run from Nicholas Wells and Nolan Bornhorst. The Cardinals struck on what I believe to be a trick play. A low snap was picked up by running back Wells. Wells move to his left and threw a pass to Mitchell Hays.

Hays broke one tackle and took the ball 29 yards to pay dirt with just 18.1 seconds left in the first quarter. Owen Gabel extra point put New Bremen up 7-0.

The second Parkway possession of the second quarter end with an interception by Braeden Suchland of New Bremen. The Cardinals called a timeout before their next play on offensive. Whatever was discussed during the timeout worked as Bornhorst dashed 38 yards for a Cardinal touchdown with 5:11 left in the first half, 13-0 New Bremen.

Parkway finally got good field position thanks to a long kickoff return from Jack Wehe. A long 16 yard run by Jason Luth plus another 25 yard reception by Luth put the Panthers in the red zone.

Eli Rich took a stretch play three yards for the first Panthers touchdown with 2:41 left in the second quarter. After the Rich touchdown, New Bremen lead was cut to 13-6.

The Cardinals were working the ball down the field to end the first half before a bad snap put them in second and twenty. Two players later Bornhorst under-threw his target Suchland but as the Parkway defender tried to pick the ball off it deflected into the air. Suchland grabbed the deflection and dashed a good 20 yards into the end zone for a 61 yard touchdown pass with 31.7 second left.

Gabel added the extra point and New Bremen went into the intermission up 20-6.

The Cardinals caught their second break on their first drive of the second half. Bornhorst threw a deep ball to his tight end Patrick Wells. Wells had to adjust to the under-thrown pass and make a circus catch off of a possible deflection from a Panther corner.

Bornhorst and Wells connected for a 40 yard touchdown pass with 8:55 left in the third quarter. Gabel added the extra point to put New Bremen up 27-6.

Parkway responded quickly on their next possession with a Nick Hawk 57 yard touchdown run. Corey Walls added the point after and the Panthers cut the New Bremen lead to 27-13.

The Parkway defense got a big stop on the Cardinal offense to force a punt with 2:39 left in the third.

The Panthers offense couldn’t convert the stop into points. New Bremen scored on their next possession to ice the game with a 14 yard touchdown run from Zach Bertke to give the Cardinals a 33-13 victory.

New Bremen improves to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in the MAC. Parkway drops to 1-6 on the year and 1-4 in the MAC.
