DELPHOS – The Van Wert Cougars put on a hitting clinic in the fifth inning to surge past the Jefferson Wildcats in ACME baseball Wednesday. Lennon Bartley kept the Jefferson bats at bay by only allowing two hits in six innings of work as Van Wert took home the road win, 8-0.

Braxton Scalf had a solid outing for the Wildcats until the fourth inning. Three hits and an error loaded the bases for the Cougars before TJ Reynolds stepped to the plate. Owen Treece scored on a sacrifice fly by Reybolds, but an error cost the Cats another run as Nate Temple crossed home plate to make it 2-0 Van Wert.

Bartley was nearly unstoppable all night. He allowed only one baserunner through the first three innings and struck out the side in the bottom of the third. His dominating performance was key to the Cougars victory and kept the Jefferson batters guessing throughout the game.

Van Wert erupted in the top of the fifth by scoring six runs on five hits as the Wildcat defense and pitching began to break down. Bartley helped his own cause with a two RBI single to center that scored Halker and Jake Lautzenheiser. Treece came through with a double to bring home Bartley and Hayden Maples to make it 6-0 Cougars. Treece and Temple also scored for a second time in the game later that inning.

Van Wert loaded the bases in the sixth and the seventh but failed to produce any runs. Jefferson relief pitcher Matt Schroeder worked out of the jam on both occasions to hold them scoreless for the remainder of the game.

“Bartley and Scalf pitched really well to start the game,” said Van Wert head coach Brady Dunlap. “We were aggressive on the base paths and had some timely hits. Bartley threw a great game and challenged some of their hitters.”

Jefferson head coach Jason Mahlie was disappointed after the game. “We couldn’t hit the ball. Van Wert has a great team, but we lacked enthusiasm today.”
