VAN WERT — The Lady Cougars notched their third win of the season behind 13 points from Sofi Houg, and 12 from Jamison Clouse against Lincolnview over the weekend by a final score of 50-35.

Saturday's game had a purpose larger than basketball, as the two teams battled to raise money off the court to bring awareness to human trafficking before doing battle between the lines.

The Lady Cougars came out on top as they raised the most money toward the cause and earned possession of the traveling trophy until next year's game.

As for the game itself, Van Wert took control of the contest early and were able to hold off a number of runs by Lincolnview to secure the victory.

Annie Mendenhall led off the game with a three, but it turned out to be the Lady Lancers only field goal of the quarter as they were only able to manage two free throws the rest of the way.

Jamison Clouse scored back-to-back buckets to erase Lincolnview's early 3-2 lead, and Sofi Houg made a 5-0 run by herself for the Cougars, draining a three pointer following with two free throws to open up an 11-3 lead.

Additional free throws from Lincolnview's Jordan Decker and Van Wert's Jaylyn Rickard brought the score to 12-5 at the end of the first.

The Lancers lost a little ground early in the second, but made up for a slow start to trim the deficit before the half.

Carlee Young found the goal from distance to widen the Van Wert lead to nine early in the second at 14-5.

The lead stayed at a comfortable eight for the home team when Houg scored to make the game 18-10, but Lincolnview made their run to get back in the mix.

Mendenhall drilled two 3 pointers and Jordan Decker hit two free throws to bring the game back to one possession at 20-18.

Two late Kyra Welch free throws sent the game to halftime at 22-18.

The game may have went into the locker room close, but when the two teams came out for the second half, Van Wert slid into the driver's seat and took control.

The third quarter proved to be Lincolnview's ultimate demise as they were outscored in the period 17-8.

The Lady Cougars opened the half on a 12-3 run, getting buckets from Houg, Clouse, Jaylyn Rickard and Caylee Phillips.

Mendenhall and Brianna Ebel were the only two Lady Lancers to record a field goal in the quarter, and two of only three Lincolnview players to score in the game.

Phillips hit a three ending the visiting team's small 5-2 run, and the third ended with the score at 39-26.

The final eight minutes saw the Lady Cougars put the game into cruise control as they carried a double digit lead for the majority of the fourth.

Four different Lady Cougars scored in the final quarter to lead the home team to their third win of the season, improving their record to 3-9 overall, and 1-3 in the WBL. Lincolnview remains without a win on the season at 0-12.

Van Wert will host Paulding on Tuesday, while Lincolnview will travel to Antwerp for their next game.
