LIMA – The opening round of ACME sectional tournaments began on
Friday at Lima Central Catholic’s Player’s Field. Elida scored early and
often as they defeated Crestview by an 8-4 final.
Elida scored a
run in the bottom of the first to take the lead and never looked back.
Starting pitcher Luke Burger was responsible for the RBI and finished
with four on the day.
The Bulldogs poured it on in the second
inning. They erupted for five runs and took a 6-0 lead after two. Burger
had his second double of the night and knocked in two as Crestview
couldn’t buy an out. Knights pitcher Kole Small concluded the inning by
striking out the last two batters of the inning, but the damage was
already done.
The Knights took back two runs in the top of the
third. Kaden Short and Riley Saylor both crossed the plate in the inning
but that was all Crestview could muster for the game. Elida added two
insurance runs in the bottom of the third in route to their 8-2 victory
over the Knights.
“The big key is that we left eleven guys on
base,” said Crestview head coach Jeff Helm. “We couldn’t come up with a
two-out hit. If we would have came up with a hit or two with two outs it
would have been a different game.”
The Knights will face
elimination on Saturday morning. Crestview awaits the outcome of
Friday’s Van Wert/Shawnee game, which was suspended due to darkness.
That game will be resumed at 10 a.m. with the Indians leading Van Wert,
6-5 entering the top of the seventh. The loser of the Indians/Cougars
game will immediately face Crestview with their season on the line.
Elida will face the winner of the Van Wert/Shawnee game in a scheduled
12:30 p.m. winner’s bracket game on Saturday.
