DELPHOS – The Crestview Knights battled back in the seventh inning to overcome an early Delphos Jefferson lead Monday. Brant Richardson knocked in the go-ahead run to secure a 5-4 victory for the Knights.

It was all Wildcats in the first inning. Hunter Haehn scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Crestview starter Brant Richardson and put Jefferson out in front 1-0. Josh Wiseman brought Conner Anspach and Darnell Simpson in to score on a two out single and stretched the lead to 3-0. The hit parade wasn’t over yet for the Cats as Matt Schroeder hit a shot down the first base line to score Wiseman and give Jefferson an early 4-0 advantage.

After being held scoreless in their first at-bat, Crestview broke the ice in the second inning. Jaylen Jefferson smashed a two RBI triple that scored Brody Brecht and Logan Gerardot and cut the Wildcat lead in half.

A leadoff walk to Kaden Short opened the third inning and came back to haunt Jefferson. Griffin Painter drove him in on a groundball to the right side of the infield and made it a one run ballgame.

Griffin came on as a relief pitcher for the Knights in the fourth inning and slammed the door on the Jefferson offense. He held the Cats without a hit through his four innings of work and picked up the win.

Crestview tied the game at 4-4 in the top half of the fifth inning. Korbin Hartman hit a single to left field that scored Short for the second time in the game and put the Knights right back in the game.

Hunter Haehn was called upon to hold Crestview in check for the seventh, but things didn’t go as planned for the Wildcats. Two straight walks opened the inning as Richardson stepped to the plate. He ripped a ball down the first-base line and scored Riley Saylor to give the Knights a 5-4 lead late in the game.

Painter retired Jefferson’s batters in order to end the inning and the game.

Delphos head coach Jason Mahlie believes simple mistakes cost them the game. “We made some mental mistakes in the field, but our starting pitcher was throwing strikes and that is all we can do. We made some bad plays and let them get back in the game.”

Crestview skipper Jeff Helm was happy to come away with the road win. “We had a good approach at the plate and made contact. I like the way we stayed in the game and kept giving ourselves scoring opportunities.”
