CONVOY — If Hicksville coach Lucas Smith was concerned about how his team would respond after last week’s 56-0 thrashing by Archbold, he need not have worried. Against Crestview Friday night, his Aces used big plays of 66, 58, 48, 54, and 55 yards to overcome a yeoman performance by the Knights’ Brody Brecht and pull out a 32-13 win. Hicksville is now 1-1, Crestview 0-2.

That final score was not at all indicative of the closeness of the game. Crestview trailed 20-13 early in the fourth quarter and had a 4th-and-3 on the Hicksville 27. However, the Aces then stopped the powerful junior after only a 1-yard gain, and Hicksville senior Mason Commisso went 54 yards on the next play to set up a Hicksville touchdown that pretty much put the game out of reach — 26-13 with 6:08 left.

Hicksville scored first on a 66-yard bomb from senior quarterback Jacob Miller to junior Landon Turnbull with 5:05 left in the first period. That was the first of only two Hicksville pass completions in the entire game. (Crestview also had only two completions.)

Miller broke free for a 58-yard TD with 5:32 left in the second to up the lead to 12-0, but then the momentum turned Crestview’s way where it stayed for quite awhile. Brecht went from quarterback/power runner to receiver for one play — a 35-yard scoring pass from Jayden Ward — and sophomore Kaden Kreischer booted the PAT to get within 12-7 at 2:20. That’s where it stood at the half.

With Brecht grinding out the yardage, the Knights seemed to maintain control early in the third quarter. His 4-yard TD at 3:08 put Crestview up 13-12, although the PAT kick was blocked. That lead was short-lived, however. At the 2:44 mark, Hicksville junior Kole Wertman sprinted up the middle for a 48-yard score, and the Aces converted the 2-point PAT to regain the lead at 20-13.

Brecht finished the night with 116 yards on 31 carries. He also had the only two Knight pass receptions, handled the punting duties, and played defense.

The Aces had three players with triple-digit yards rushing — Miller (10 carries/116 yards), Wertman (6 carries/122 yards), and Commisso (12 carries/137 yards). Miller also handled Hicksville’s kickoff and punting duties, as well as going fulltime on defense.
