COLUMBUS — Kalida had an impressive showing at the 2019 state track meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium over the weekend. Josh Verhoff took first in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 21.39, a new state record, and finished second in the 100-meter.

“I feel pretty good and had some great competition,” Verhoff said. “I felt good running back-to-back days. My legs were a little tired but nothing that could slow me down a lot. I’m happy and it was a great race today.”

The Lady Wildcat 4x100-meter relay team also brought home a state title after posting a time of 49.70. The team includes Hannah Berheide, Abby Magg, McKayla Magg and Brenna Smith.

“There was a lot of tough competition,” Berheide said. “The girl in first fell and gave us a chance for the win. We had to push really hard and I’m proud of my teammates.”

The Kalida relay team was the top seed going into the finals on Saturday and held on for a photo finish.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” said Abby Magg. “Watching Hannah cross the finish line was surreal — it was so much fun.”

Nelaya Burden of Spencerville finished third in the girls 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 14.93 was enough to land her on the podium at the state meet.

“This is something that you just have to take in,” Burden said. “Placing third in the state meet is not a bad thing, it’s something a lot of people do not get to experience. I’m excited that I have a whole year left and I am going to work hard through the winter months and prepare.”

Burden placed seventh in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.38.

Brayden Ladd of St. John’s placed 10th in the boys shot put and 17th in the discus throw. Addison Mueller ended run at state in the girls long jump with a distance of 15-07.00 for a 13th place finish.

Quinley Schlagbaum of Ottoville advanced to finals in the girls 300-meter hurdles and placed sixth with a time of 46.26. She finished ninth in the preliminaries on Friday.

Alyssa Ellerbrock of Columbus Grove placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:17.07 and Rylee Sybert finished fourth in the girls 200-meter dash.
