CONVOY — Crestview quickly put an end to any doubts about the ultimate outcome of Saturday night’s Division VII, Region 28 opener against Miami Valley Christian Academy, totally dominating the Lions in the first half and holding on for a 51-30 win.

The 2nd-ranked (in Region 28) Knights (10-1) will play 3rd-ranked Minster, a 51-6 Saturday night winner over Riverside, next Saturday at 7:00 at a site to be determined. MVCA ends its season at 7-3.

“Our execution, offensively and defensively, was very sharp,” said Crestview coach Jared Owens. “We played really well, early on especially. The second half they had some momentum, but I thought we continued to play hard and played pretty well all night.”

MVCA, a member of the ten-team Miami Valley Conference, is located in Newtown, near Cincinnati, so it was a 160-mile, three-hour drive. Thus, it must have been a discouraging first half for Lion fans. The Knights led 30-8 after the first 24 minutes. MVCA had totalled one yard rushing and had completed only one pass, albeit a 62-yard touchdown as the first quarter ended.

Meanwhile, Crestview senior quarterback Drew Kline was working his usual magic on offense, along with some unusual magic on defense — three first-half interceptions.

Crestview had 19 first downs in those 24 minutes (MVCA had one) while rolling up 282 yards. Kline had hit on 10 of 19 passes for 168 yards and rushed seven times for 82 yards. Senior Derick Dealey had caught four passes for 92 yards and one touchdown.

With a roster composed of only 19 players (Crestview listed 45) one would have expected the Lions to struggle mightily in the second half. They didn’t. In fact, MVCA played the Knights evenly in those 24 minutes, actually outscoring the hosts 22-21 and out-gaining them 190-172.

Crestview took the second half kickoff and promptly went 56 yards in four plays, scoring on a 4-yard run by sophomore fullback Brody Brecht at 10:48. Kline hit senior Landin Burch for the 2-point PAT, putting the game into running-clock territory at 38-8.

However, the highly-touted MVAC running game then came to life behind seniors Seth Henderson and Jon Surman, and the Lions put a stop to the running clock with a 31-yard Henderson TD scamper at 5:06. Henderson then added the 2-point PAT on a pass from senior quarterback Caleb Lusby — 38-16.

Kline pulled off another of his magical escape acts, a 26-yard run with 2:16 left in the third quarter, and freshman Ayden Lichtensteiger booted the PAT — 45-16, not quite a running-clock margin.

Brecht scored on a one-yard run with 9:15 left in the game. The PAT kick was not good, but the clock was running again — 51-16. The Lions added two more late touchdowns to narrow the final margin.

Kline ended his night with 13 rushes for 165 yards and 12-for-21 passing for 212 yards. Brecht had 14 carries for 60 yards and three TD’s.

It was the final home game for 15 Crestview seniors. “This place is special for them (the seniors),” said Owens. “They’ve got a lot of memories here. I think as they look back that’ll make tonight much more special, but the distraction of next week and being able to play in Week 12 is a good one and something we’ll be looking forward to.”
