COLUMBUS GROVE — Sometimes you can’t simmer a team on fire. Crestview learned this on Thursday as they traveled to Columbus Grove, and were defeated by the Lady Bulldogs 55-40 in the NWC opener.

Both teams shot the ball well in Thursday’s match-up— Columbus Grove shot better though. The Lady Bulldogs were 8-10 from behind the arch, and 59 percent from the field overall (20-34). Crestview on the other hand shot exactly at a 50 percent clip, and was 6-8 from the perimeter.

The shooting clinic that took place was most on display when after nearly two minutes of a dry spell to start the game the teams traded shots like the old Larry Bird and Michael Jordan McDonald’s commercials. Lexi Gregory started things off with a short bucket. Grove’s Abby Gladwell came down and hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, which Olivia Cunningham then answered back with a three of her own. That would be Crestview’s last basket of the quarter, but the Bulldogs didn’t stop. Kenzie King then hit a 3-pointer the next three times down the floor. King finished leading both teams as she dropped 21 points, 16 in the first half half alone. After Gregory’s basket to open the salvo of scoring, the Lady Knights never held the lead again.

The biggest difference was definitely Grove’s ability to force turnovers. Crestview had 11 turnovers to Grove’s lowly three. While both teams shot very well, the Lady Bulldogs ability to not rush their offense was very influential to their ability to score. They didn’t force shots, and always trusted their ability to get each other open.

After the first quarter, the game was quite even. As though the Lady Knights never won a quarter, besides the first they never lost a quarter by more than a point. They fell behind after the first 17-5 and never recovered.

Crestview will be back in action next Thursday when they host Bluffton for NWC action. The lost was just the second of the season for the Lady Knights, as they lost the season opener to Ottoville.
