DELPHOS — Brant Richardson knocked in Logan Gerardot late in the game to lift the Crestview Knights past the St. John’s Blue Jays, 6-5.

Crestview jumped out to an early lead with help from Richardson. His RBI single scored Kaden Short with one out in the top half of the opening inning for the first run of the game. St. John’s starting pitcher, Luke Reindel, settled in after the quick score and retired the next two batters to work out of the jam.

The Knights made it 2-0 in the second thanks to a series of errors by the Jays. Brody Brecht was hit in the neck on a throw to first that caused him to temporarily leave the game. A pick off throw to first didn’t go as planned and allowed the runner to advance into scoring position. Trevor Sheets knocked him in with an RBI double that hit the fence in deep left and narrowly missed a home run.

Kaden Small held the Blue Jays hitless through four innings of work while racking up eight strikeouts.

Jaylen Jefferson used his speed to score in the top half of the fifth inning. A bad throw to second allowed him to sneak in for the run and made it 3-0, Crestview.

St. John’s had five of their seven hits in the bottom of the fifth after a hitless game to that point. They erupted for five runs and snatch the lead from the Knights to go out in front 5-3.

Crestview fired right back in the sixth by plating two more runs and tying the game at five apiece. Sheets hit a two RBI single that scored Small and Brecht to give his team the momentum late in the game.

Geradot led off the top of the seventh and drew a walk to put the go-ahead runner on base. Richardson came through in the clutch and drove him in with a shot right to give the Knights a 6-5 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Jays managed to get a runner on but failed to convert it into a run as Crestview hung on for the win, 6-5.

“We didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning and then our guys started hitting the ball,” said St. John’s head coach Buddy Jackson. “We are starting to see them get better and better every game. They are defiantly coming along, and we will be ready next game.”

Crestview head coach Jeff Helm was happy to get the win but still sees room for improvement.

“St. John’s kept us off balance all night with their pitching and I don’t think our approach was good at the plate," Helm said. "Okay effort, but we can be better, and the kids know that as well.”
