VAN WERT — Tuesday night was senior night in ‘The Den’ as Van Wert honored seniors Reagan Priest, Alexis Metz, Abby Jackson and Sierra Shaffer. Unfortunately, Van Wert fell to the Bryan Golden Bears 35-46.

All season long, the Lady Cougars have played to the final whistle of the game, regardless of score or opponent. Tuesday, was no different. Van Wert was down 28-12 at half time, but the Lady Cougars came out firing in the third period as they went on a 12-2 run to get back into the ball game.

Both the first and third quarter started the same way— scoreless. It took three minutes of play before either team scored, with Bryan scoring first both times. The difference was in the way that the home team responded.

After Bryan extended their lead to 18 points, the Cougars used their speed to create havoc and scored 12 consecutive points. It started with seven straight points by Abby Jackson. Jackson made a move on the post to start the run, then almost immediately hit a 3-pointer in transition— thanks to a steal by Priest. Abby scored, once more on the post and Sierra Shaffer hit a 3-pointer to force Bryan’s head coach Todd Grosjean to call a time out.

Directly out of the time out, Shaffer stripped the basketball from Kennedy Lamberson on the inbounds pass and scored. This run created excitement in the crowd, as the spectators were energized by the Lady Cougars play. The same token that got the Lady Cougars into the game, was the what took them out of it.

During Van Wert’s 12 point run, they were jumping passing lanes, trapping ball handlers and generally playing with an enthusiasm that has been their badge all season long. After a while, the Golden Bears were able to slow down the game and get open shots. In the final two minutes of the third period Bryan scored nine points, compared to the Lady Cougars four.

Bryan was able to hold off Van Wert in fourth, eventually winning 46-35.

The Golden Bears were led by Lamberson and Baylee Krupp. Lamberson scored 12 points on the night, she went 5-8 from the free throw line. Krupp tallied nine points on the evening.

The Cougs were led by two seniors as Shaffer and Jackson combined for 28 of the home team’s 35 points. Jackson totaled 15, including nine in the third quarter. While Shaffer tallied 13, seven in the third.

Van Wert drops to 5-13 on the season. They will travel to Bath on Thursday.
