MIDDLE POINT – It’s no secret that the Lincolnview Lady Lancers have struggled against conference opponents this year, but they had a chance to set the record straight on Thursday night as they hosted the Ada Bulldogs. The Lancers quashed a second half comeback attempt by the Bulldogs and came away victorious 42-35.

Lincolnview started the game with enormous intensity. Kayla Schimmoeller kicked off an 8-1 run by the Lancers with a put back under the rim. Oliva Gorman got in on the action by dropping an acrobatic layup while drawing the foul to extend the Lancer lead. Lincolnview owned the boards all evening and won the rebound battle in the first quarter 11-6. Their tough play in the paint and quick strike ability allowed for a 12-4 lead after one.

Ada began to find cracks in the Lancers defense to start the second quarter. Anney Archer hit a three from the wing to kick things off for the Bulldogs. Maddie Gossard found pay dirt on their following possession and cut into the Lancers lead, but Lincolnview fired right back. Maddie Gorman hit a three from downtown and silenced the visiting Lady Dogs. Her 3-bomb set off a 9-2 run to close out the half. Raina England scored on an easy bucket in the paint with :06 remaining, but Ada faced an uphill battle if they wanted to remain relevant in the second half. Lincolnview held the lead at the half 25-12.

Ada looked like an entirely different ball club in the second half. After shooting 12 percent from the field in the first, the Bulldogs shot nearly 40 percent to close out the game. Anney Archer had 8 points in the third quarter and was pivotal in the late-game rally by Ada. The Bulldogs started the third quarter on a 9-0 run and all but erased the sizable lead attained by the Lancers. Archer drained a three while on the scoring streak as the Bulldogs drew within four of the Lancers. Alena Looser knocked down a jumper to put the brakes on the red-hot Lady Dogs, but Teara Coulson hit a three and Archer followed up with one of her own and gave Ada their first lead of the game. Schimmoeller scored for Lincolnview as time expired in the third quarter and swung the advantage back in favor of the Lancers, but the momentum had obviously shifted, and Lincolnview had to be spot-on to seal the win.

The first four minutes of the final quarter belonged to Ada. Raina England and Maddie Gossard knocked down threes to give their team a 35-32 advantage. Maddie Gorman fired back with a 3-ball from the wing and knotted things up at 35 apiece with 3:20 remaining in the game. Lincolnview’s hard work in the paint began to pay dividends when a rebound and the put back by Oliva Gorman gave the Lancers the lead for the final time. Maddie Gorman converted on her field goal on the following possession and extended the lead to 39-35. Ada was forced to foul but the Lady Lancers were solid from the line and went 3-for-4 to close out the game as they escape with the victory 42-35.

Lincolnview head coach Dan Williamson was happy to get the win. “We played well in the first half but then they come out in the third and fourth quarters and knocked down threes. That brought them right back and kept them in the game until the last 1:30. We knocked down the free throws at the end and that benefited us as well,” he said. “We got killed on the glass Monday at Fort Jennings, so it was definitely a focus in practice, and they responded tonight. We boxed out really well, gave up some offensive rebounds, but not as many. The last two games we won were not our best. That’s okay but we need to play better in longer stretches.”

Lincolnview improves to 10-11 (2-5 NWC) while Ada falls to 1-15 (0-7 NWC). The Lancers won a shortened Junior Varsity game 24-4.
