DEFIANCE — Dismal shooting the middle two quarters and a dominating effort by Defiance on the boards in the final three quarters proved to be the difference as the host Bulldogs knocked off Wayne Trace 51-47 in non-league girls basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Raiders jumped in front after one quarter, taking a 14-10 lead. Wayne Trace was 7 of 11 in the period from the field, but that would change in the next two periods.

Quarter Nos. 2 and 3 saw the Raiders make only 3 of 21 shots from the field, and Defiance took advantage, dominating the boards to limit Wayne Trace to one shot while getting multiple chances on the other end.

“I thought we showed some good things tonight,” said Raider head coach Bethany DeJarnett. “We came out and shot the ball well there early, and that is the start we wanted. But, we went cold there in the middle two quarters, and we cannot afford to have stretches like that. I thought the girls got good shots, but we just weren’t able to connect.”

Those missed shots became more of an issue as Defiance enjoyed an 11-5 advantage on the glass in the second quarter, followed by a 12-5 differential in the third. Defiance also grabbed 7 offensive rebounds in that stretch. After Wayne Trace won the battle of the boards 9-2 in the first quarter, the Bulldogs grabbed 36 rebounds to the Raiders’ 20 in the last three periods.

“Rebounding is going to have to be a team concept for us with our lack of overall height,” DeJarnett said. “Defiance took advantage of its height differential, and that is something we are going to have to deal with this year.”

After the Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 27-9 in the middle two quarters to take a 37-23 lead into the fourth quarter, Wayne Trace battled back. Miriam Sinn and Claire Sinn hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Raiders within 39-29 before consecutive baskets from Kaylee Shepherd and Brooke Sinn trimmed Wayne Trace’s deficit to 41-33.

After a 3-point play by Defiance’s Carlee Smiddy, two Brooke Sinn free throws along with a 3-pointer by Miriam Sinn and a Shepherd bucket got the Raiders within 46-40. Sadie Tuckerman hit one of two foul shots to give Defiance a 47-40 lead, but Wayne Trace drew closer.

A Claire Sinn 3-pointer was followed by a Sadie Sinn basket, off of a Miriam Sinn assist, to slice the Raider deficit to 47-45. However, Defiance’s Caroline Turner answered to put the Bulldogs in control with a two consecutive buckets that extended the advantage to 51-45.

Gracie Gudakunst scored late for Wayne Trace to get the Raiders within 51-47, but that would close the game’s scoring and the 4-point Bulldog victory.

Shepherd led the Raider scoring effort with a dozen points with Brooke Sinn adding 9 and Claire Sinn chipping in 8. Miriam Sinn, Sadie Sinn and Gudakunst all had 6 points for Wayne Trace. Shepherd and Gudakunst grabbed 7 and 6 rebounds, respectively, with Gudakunst and Claire Sinn dishing out 3 assists each.

Emily Poling led the way for Defiance, which evens its record at 1-1, by scoring 11 points while Turner chipped in 10. Kennedy Replogle topped the Bulldogs on the boards with 11 rebounds and Smiddy picked up 6.

The Bulldogs also captured the junior varsity contest with a 53-47 win over the Raiders.

Wayne Trace, which is now 0-1, returns to action on Tuesday as the Raiders hit the road to Bryan for a non-league battle with the Golden Bears.
