ELIDA – Several area high school volleyball teams met in Elida for a six-way scrimmage on Wednesday. The event gave coaches an opportunity to showcase their team and evaluate the upcoming competition.

Jefferson got a chance to play Northwest Conference rival Lincolnview in the opening round. The Lancers swept the Lady Cats in two straight sets, 25-12 and 25-16. Senior Lakin Brant emerged as the clear leader on the court as the Lancers made quick work of Jefferson.

“I am very pleased with where we are at,” said Lincolnview head coach JaNahn Evans. “We need to work on passing to the target and executing some offensive plays, but right now we are doing what we need to do at this point. I expect us to grow and continue to do better as the days go on. We are serving the ball well and our hitters are being aggressive.”

The Wildcats bounced back in the second round when they faced Elida but really turned it around in the third match against Bath. The team played as one unit and that translated into a number of good plays.

“This is my first year as head coach, so I am still trying to figure out where the girls play best,” said Jefferson head coach Jacklyn Smith. “We haven’t had a lot of the girls working together throughout the summer, so we are trying to figure out where we all fit.”

The regular season officially gets underway on Aug. 18.
