VAN WERT — The Van Wert County Foundation Tennis Complex hosted the first Van Wert Invitational Saturday with Ottawa-Glandorf narrowly winning the four-team affair 17-16 over the Cougars.

While Van Wert and Lima Shawnee went with their usual lineups, Ottawa-Glandorf shuffled some of its doubles players into singles and vice versa. St. Mary’s was represented by its JV players, the varsity being involved in another tournament.

Van Wert highlights were at second singles and third singles where junior Zane Fast and senior Michael Hellman took championships. Both Fast and Hellman feature finesse, variety, and consistency. Neither player was seriously threatened in their victories. Fast is now 10-3, Hellman 5-3.

At first singles, Van Wert senior lefty Kannen Wannemacher was evenly matched with Shawnee junior Carter Schaaf in his semifinal, but Schaaf had fewer errors and escaped 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Wannemacher came back to win his third place match 6-3, 7-5 over St. Mary’s freshman Joey Vanderhorst. Wannemacher’s record is now 3-8.

The Cougars’ first doubles team of sophomore Kaden Thomas and junior Nathan Ruger made it to the championship game via a 6-4, 6-4 win over Van Wert teammates Cody Gamble and Micah Rager, who were filling in for the Shawnee team which was unable to play. Then, however, Thomas/Ruger ran into O-G’s twin sophomores, lefty Collin Welch and righty Carter Welch, losing 6-2, 6-1. Collin Welch typically plays third singles and Carter Welch first singles. They were the hardest hitters on the courts Saturday.

Van Wert’s second doubles team of freshman Jace Fast and junior Nick Carter won its semifinal easily but was crushed 6-2, 6-0 in the final by O-G juniors Kamron Maag and Parker Schomaeker. Maag normally plays first doubles for the Titans. Parker typically plays second singles.
