ELIDA — Lincolnview has had a great season this far into the spring, but they were always looking for a win to hang their hat on. On Tuesday they found it. The Lady Lancers upset the top seeded Parkway 4-3, to advance to the District championship.

Any nerves that Lincolnview had going into the game could have been put aside by the first swing. Lakin Brant took 1-0 pitch over the left center-field wall for a homerun to open the matchup. That was the spark plug for the Lady Lancers.

“Lakin Brant, she has been struggling a little bit, but you go to a senior to lead off for you,” said Lancer head coach Brad Doidge. “Next thing you know she hits one out of the ball park for us.”

The Lancers added on to that lead in the second with a one out single by Tori Boyd. Boyd stole second and then came around to score on a two-out error.

Though the Lady Panthers’ Macy Henkle gave up two runs, she was doing the opposite of struggling— as she struck out five of the first six outs. She went five strong striking out seven and allowing three runs (two earned). Though she did throw 102 pitches from six hits and three walks.

Lincolnview had a much more rock-steady performance in the circle. Amy Beair went the distance as she threw just 83 pitches, allowing three earned runs on three hits.

“We discussed yesterday, she was going to have the ball. She wanted the ball,” said Doidge. “After she gave up three, she came back strong. She did well, the top of their line up is pretty scary.”

After going quiet in the first three innings, Parkway responded with a lead off double to left field by Strickler. She come around and scored on an error. Temple was hit by a pitch, which brought up the Lady Panthers most prolific slugger, Allie Ford, as the tying run. She did what sluggers do, she hit a go ahead homerun. Parkway led 3-2.

Baeir collected herself and put down the next ten of 11 batters to nullify any Parkway offense. All she needed was a couple of runs, and she got it.

The fifth inning was both a coaches dream and coaches nightmare for Lincolnview. The Lady Lancers started off the frame with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out— coaches dream. Then two back-to-back infield pop ups quickly lessened the scoring opportunity— coaches nightmare. Carly Wendel came through in the clutch with an eight pitch at bat that walked in the tying run.

“I was kind of apprehensive there,” said Doidge. “We are without our three-hitter, [Destiny] Coil. Its tough to replace a three hitter. But we finally got what we needed. Wendel had a good battle and did what she needed to do and got a run in.”

Annie Mendenhall scored the game-winning run in the top of the sixth. She reached on a fielder’s choice. The second basemen took off for second, which warranted a throw from the catcher— nobody covered second. Mendenhall took third on the error, and scored on Lakin Brant’s single.

The Lady Lancers held the 4-3 lead for the last six outs and beat top seeded Parkway for chance to play in the District Finals. Lincolnview will play none other than arch-rival Crestview. The two teams have met twice already, with each taking one win.
