VAN WERT - The Van Wert Legion Baseball team split a pair of games this week by posting a 7-1 victory over Troy before falling to Sidney 3-2.

Against Troy, a four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference for Van Wert.

Leading 2-1 in the fourth inning, Jayden Youtsey (Lincolnview) led off with a triple with a Nathan Temple (Van Wert) plating Youtsey on a run-scoring single.

After a Keaton Brown (Van Wert) walk, Hayden Maples (Van Wert) moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Alex Schneider (Columbus Grove) then followed with a two-run single to put Van Wert on top 5-1. T.J. Reynolds (Van Wert) plated Schneider with a single to widen the Van Wert lead to 6-1.

In the sixth, Van Wert picked up its final run on a Caleb Fetzer (Van Wert) double that scored Reynolds to set the final margin at 7-1.

Clayton Agler (Parkway) threw seven innings to get the victory, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out three. The lone Troy run was unearned.

Temple led the Van Wert offense with a pair of singles while Reynolds, Brown and Schneider all added singles. Youtsey chipped in  triple for Van Wert and Fetzer posted a double.

The following evening, Sidney nipped host Van Wert 3-2 with a two-run rally in the top of the sixth.

Sidney scored first in the contest, getting a single run in the fourth before Van Wert answered in the home half of the frame.

Temple walked before eventually scoring on a Maples single to tie the game at 1-1.

The hosts then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Schneider singled and later scored in the inning on a Fetzer run-scoring single to put Van Wert on top 2-1.

However, the visitors then came right back with a two-run sixth to seize a 3-2 advantage and post the victory.

Nick Woods (Columbus Grove) took the loss for Van Wert, giving up five hits, four walks and three runs (two earned) while striking out six in seven innings of work.

Maples topped the Van Wert offense with three singles and a run batted in while Schneider, Reynolds, Fetzer, Reid Spencer (Allen East) and Temple all added singles.

Van Wert is now 17-7 on the season.
