CONVOY — Van Wert wrapped up a spot at next week’s ACME district tournament with a 9-2 win over Lincolnview on Sunday afternoon in Convoy.

After plating an unearned run in the home half of the first, the Cougars put the game out of reach with a 5-run second inning.

Lincolnview lefty Ethan Kemler issued a walk to Nathan Temple to begin the inning and faced only one more batter. Jalen McCracken’s sacrifice bunt was successful, and Kemler immediately motioned for the dugout. He was replaced on the mound by Collin Overholt, but the sophomore right hander suffered from some more suspect Lancer defense. Lennon Bartley reached on an error, then three straight Cougar hits made it 3-0.

Jaxson Amweg scampered home on a passed ball, Parker Conrad drove in a run on a ground out, and Lawson Blackmore made it 6-0 with an infield hit.

On the mound, Blackmore didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the third. Overholt connected on a drove over the head of Cougar right fielder Lennon Bartley and wound up at third base. Blacmore then hit Brayden Evans with a pitch before Braxton Fox singled home two runs. A Kemler single followed, and that brought a mound visit from the Van Wert coaching staff. Blackmore then regained command by fanning Creed Jessee to end the inning.

The Cougars immediately struck back with a run in the home half as Amweg drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Blackmore then fanned the side in order in the top of the fourth.

The Lancers had their next best chance to get back into the game in the sixth. Blackmore issued a walk to Jessee and was relieved on the mound by Hayden Maples. Before the Cougar reliever threw a pitch, he threw away a pick-off attempt nd Jesse wound up at third with no one out. Maples calmly came back to strikeout wach of the next two batters , then grabbed a chopper off the bat of Carson Fox to end the threat.

The Cougars added on in the sixth. Temple singled and TJ Reynolds was hit by a pitch. After a Lancer error, scored one run, Reynolds came home on a wild pitch for a 9-2 score board. Maples then escaped a bases loaded jam in the seveth, as the game ended on a fly ball to Bartley in right that wound up as a 9-3-5-4 double play.

Van Wert dvances to the district tournament to be held next week at Lima Central Catholic. The Cougars will be the No. 1 seed from the West division and will play against the No. 2 seed from the East sectional. Lincolnview will play Crestview on Monday evening in Convoy for the right to be the second team from the West sectional to move on.
