VAN WERT - The Lady Cougar tennis team opened the season with a strong showing at Archbold on Saturday with a clean sweep across the board.

Freshman Grace Lott made a successful varsity debut in which she defeated Maggie Henry 6-1 in the first set, and 6-2 in the second set.

Senior Alli Morrow picked up a win in her singles match, taking down Elizabeth Mignin in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Junior Lizzie Rutkowkski completed the sweep for singles side of the match when she defeated Sara Lovejoy 6-1, 6-0.

"Everyone was on top of their game from the top of the roster, to the bottom," said head coach Eli Alvarez. "We weren't able to pick up a 5-0 win all year last year, so this is a great accomplishment for us."

The Van Wert doubles teams made quick work of their matches to finish off the sweep for the Cougars.

Paige Moonshower and Allie Etter took care of Adriana Thompson and Mya Stucky yielding only one total point during their 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Kaylee Jennings and Jada Buckner beat Katie Rose and Abbie Elkins 6-2, 6-2 to finish the day for the Cougars.

Van Wert will travel to Sydney Lehman Catholic High School to face the Cavaliers on Tuesday before opening W.B.L. play on Thursday at home against Defiance.
