VAN WERT -- After running through St Mary’s in the district semifinals, Van Wert is set to face Minster on Saturday in the ACME state tournament.

Van Wert enters the game with a record of 12-2-2 after a 9-3 victory over the Roughriders to clinch a trip to the state semifinals in Coldwater.

With yet another stellar performance from their offense, the Cougars will look to build off of Turner Witten’s three hit game, which led to a nine run outburst on Monday. Van Wert has scored at least six runs in four out of its five tournament games to give them a perfect postseason record leading into Saturday.

Witten, along with Jacob Place and Parker Conrad have been a few of the most consistent offensive players the Cougars have relied on during the ACME season.

Conrad enters Saturday as the team leader in runs batted in with 10, and Jacob Place has been the hit king with a grand total of 15 on the season.

This trio of Van Wert hitters have also contributed significantly on the mound, but none as impressive as Josh Halker and Owen Treece.

Treece is coming off of another strong outing against St Mary’s, as he has led the Cougars to two wins in the past week against the Roughriders. In those two starts, Treece saw only two earned runs cross the plate, and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Just like Owen Treece, Josh Halker has enjoyed an outstanding short season on the mound. He’s a perfect 3-0 and has only surrendered three earned runs in the 26 innings he’s pitched. Halker also leads the team in strikeouts with 25.

The Cougar pitching staff will need to come up with a strong all around performance if they hope to keep the Wildcat offense in check.

Minster blanked Coldwater 12-0 in their district finals game to pave their way to the state tournament. The Wildcats will enter play with a 13-4 record on the ACME season.

The two teams will face off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Coldwater High School in the second of four first round tournament games.
